black women being

a mama short film

Traveled hours upstate New York to create something very beautiful with some amazing creatives. My only plan when directing this project was to make something beautiful that I could be proud of. When planning I knew that this would stretch me creatively and be the most intentionally beautiful thing I have ever made.

I scouted the location through Home Studio List and things unfolded perfectly. We pulled up to the location with no cell service and no distraction, the house was exactly as pictured. The rain almost made me concerned for the day because natural lighting was a must and a gloomy day wasn’t apart of my vision. Even though it rained for hours it was a bright day in the space with so much character.

Once unpacked we traveled around the space freely, shooting in every room letting the day guide us. The short film is just a combination of short clips of black women just being them. Natural movement is perfection and I would much rather observe and curate those moments. This short film has left me inspired and ready to consistently stretch myself creatively and work with different women that inspire me.

“THEY WERE, IN FACT AND AT LAST, FREE. AND THE LIVES OF THESE OLD BLACK WOMEN WERE SYNTHESIZED IN THEIR EYES -- A PUREE OF TRAGEDY AND HUMOR, WICKEDNESS AND SERENITY, TRUTH AND FANTASY.”
― TONI MORRISON, THE BLUEST EYE

This is for creative black women, I challenge you to make the work you want to see and the productions you want to be apart of. Create without second-guessing every moment and just make something, you will thank yourself later and inspire the next generation. Sometimes the inspiration you’re looking for is within you and not around you. I am inspired by creative women like Melina, Issa, Lena + so many others that amplify black women and their stories. Thank you for making the work you do and giving other black women creators the space to know they can make anything.
